"The mulberry dance—a graceful farewell step." That final step before death—how I wish time could slow its pace just a little longer, so I might complete my last movement before departing. Speaking of farewells, I've failed to say goodbye so many times... Could this be my final chance? I tread with focused steps, soft yet resilient, gazing upon the escorting honor guard as life's final performance unfolds. "The Mulberry Step 2021" is choreographer Hsu Cheng-wei's vision of life's "final step." He transforms this last movement into a ritual—solemn, slow, quiet, even extreme and resilient—to articulate the farewell before death. By settling and transforming profound grief, Mulberry Steps gains a potent ritualistic quality. The piece also employs contact improvisation and live musical improvisation to create a unique aesthetic of death rituals. For "Mulberry Steps 2021," a collaboration with Taiwan Sound Lab utilizes a 49.4-channel speaker array system and cross-disciplinary live musicians to create a fully immersive sound theater. expanding the work's exploration of life's unspoken farewells. Audiences will resonate across layers of movement and sound, experiencing an extraordinary sensory impact.
