Eastern instruments differ from Western ones in both tone and temporality. Take the simple act of plucking a string on a guzheng: the speed, strength, and angle at which the finger touches the string, along with the type of pressure applied, all influence the resonance and the lingering sense of time in the sound’s afterglow. These fine details shape the character of a single note. This piece attempts to use live-looping electronic music by placing a contact microphone not only to capture the subtle sounds of the performer’s touch on the string but also the resonance and decay, amplifying these details. Additionally, a sensor is attached to the performer’s finger to detect the angle of movement, interacting with the visuals. The projected light is entirely controlled in real-time by the performer’s finger movements.
